Update and thoughts on Self-actualisation

Hello to all,

Firstly, an apology that our blog page has been inactive over recent months, we have been so busy at the centre, however, we have had some exciting updates.

Our team continues to grow and we have recently welcomed Melissa to the centre, please see the ‘Our Therapists’ page of the website for further information.

Additionally, our Clinical Director, Cassandra Jay, is in the 2nd year of her doctoral research studies, which is one of the reasons that we have been a bit time -limited when it comes to writing blog posts, however, she is publishing some very interesting articles in professional journals and lecturing on a number of courses.

We also recently received 2 awards from Global Health and Pharma at their annual Mental Health Awards – The Caesura Centre received the GHP Excellence award for LGBT+ aware therapy and Cassandra received the Psychotherapist of the year award for Buckinghamshire! Our awards are currently sitting pride of place in the centre and we are honoured to have received these accolades.

We currently have a couple of students working at the Caesura Centre gaining some work experience and they have been working hard on some very interesting topics for blog posts that we would like to share with you, and so to start us off, Aimee who is currently studying Criminal Psychology has put together an informative blog post on Self-actualisation!

“Ummm…what is self-actualisation?” I imagine many of you are asking to yourselves at this moment in time.

Well let me inform you with a pretentious definition in which I copied down myself from the back of a lecture hall:
‘Self-actualisation is essentially using our capacities to the fullest. It’s a drive to actualise our capacities, present in every organism.’
In more simple terms, this pretty much means: reaching and achieving your individual potential. I know right, who needs fancy terminology anyway?

Self-actualisation – the theory broken down
Self-actualisation is commonly associated with its founder, Mr. Abraham Maslow. Maslow has mapped the totality of human existence in this complex, yet fascinating idea; we all have certain basic needs, and once these basic needs have been fulfilled, we are motivated to thrive for something even better.
He groups these needs into categories spaced across five levels:

The first level describes physiological needs like those for food, water, air, and sleep (basically, what us humans cannot live without.)

The second level needs are those of safety and security, usually from the dangers that arise from social and/or political instability.

The third level describes the need for love and a sense of belonging.

The fourth level consists of the need for self-confidence, esteem as well as esteem from others.

The fifth and final level is the need for our word of the day…come on, you’ve got it…it’s… self-actualization! This is the peak of all human needs because we all want to reach a level of self-mastery that reflects our true potential and makes us optimally functional.

Perception plays a strong role in the idea of self-actualisation, there must be a belief in yourself and an awareness of when you embody self-actualised feelings.  This can be in our small achievements as well as our great ones, you could feel a sense of self-actualisation whilst involved in a sporting event, or it could be as simple as finishing a piece of work BEFORE the deadline and realising that you know more than you thought you did!

Keep going. You will get there if you believe that you can.
